Guy at the lumber yard in Carson told me to stop sorting through the pile and it clicked
I was at the yard last Tuesday digging through a stack of 2x4s for like 20 minutes, pulling out every board and stacking the bad ones off to the side. An older guy working the counter walked over and said something that stuck with me. He goes 'You're looking for perfect boards in a pile that got loaded by a forklift, you'll be there all day.' Then he showed me how he flips a board over, sights down the edge, and taps it on the rack to hear if it rings solid or sounds dead. Took him maybe 4 minutes to pull 12 good ones out of the same pile I'd been fighting with. I've been framing for 6 years and nobody ever taught me that. I tried it on my next pickup and got through the whole bundle faster than I ever have. What do you all look for first when you're picking stock, sound, sight, or just weight?
