Shoutout to the old timer who showed me his scribing trick in Phoenix

Was doing a kitchen install last March and the homeowner's dad, a retired cabinet guy, watched me fight a crown molding gap for 20 minutes. He handed me a scrap block and a pencil, marked it with a spacer offset, and traced the wall contour in one pass, dead perfect. Have any of you got a transfer method that beats the standard compass scribe?

Heard a guy swear by using a laser level with a notched block for the same trick, but tracing still beats batteries.
