Struggled with pocket holes vs dowel joints for a kitchen cabinet build last month

I had to decide between pocket holes and dowel joints for a set of cabinets I built in my own kitchen. Pocket holes are super fast and I could knock out all the joints in an afternoon. But I went with dowels because I wanted a cleaner look and didn't want to fill a bunch of holes later. Took me almost three full days to line everything up and glue it all. Ended up with a tighter joint that didn't shift at all. Anyone else prefer one over the other for face frames?

pocket hole jigs arent always perfectly aligned either, i had one that gave me headaches with the bit wandering off center on hardwood like oak. honestly i think dowels win for cabinets because they force you to square everything up as you go, less chance of a crooked face frame that you notice forever. plus with dowels you dont lose any material thickness like you do with screws poking through. pocket holes are fine for quick stuff like shop jigs or temporary fixtures but for a kitchen you use daily id say the extra time on dowels pays off in frustration saved lol.

I mean, I've had way better luck with pocket holes on hardwood than dowels honestly.

Man, I feel your pain on that one. I went back and forth for a week before building my own cabinets. The three days of dowel work is brutal, especially when you're clamping and praying nothing shifts. But you're right about the payoff - that tight joint with no visible hardware is just satisfying. I still have a scar on my thumb from a dowel center punch that slipped, but I'd do it again. Pocket holes are tempting but I swear you can always see those plugs no matter how well you sand them.
