TIL my framing square was off for three weeks and I blamed my cuts
Built a pergola for a buddy near Boise, checked every mitre with a bevel gauge and still had gaps everywhere. Turns out the square had taken a hit on site, threw it on a granite slab to verify and it was out by a full degree. Anybody else ever blame their skill before checking the tool itself?

Man, that hits home. Used to be all about blaming my cuts too, but now I check every square and level before I even start a job.

Damn, @burns.fiona you're speaking my language! It's crazy how many guys just blame the material or the blade when really it's the setup that's off. I used to be the same way until I had a friend show me how much time you save when everything's squared up first. Now I won't even grab my saw until the framing is dead level, it's like a whole different job after that. You ever find yourself re-checking mid-cut just to be safe, or is it all trust once you start?
