Vent: my miter saw fence was off by a hair for 6 months and I just blamed my tape
I spent months fighting gaps on trim jobs around Knoxville before I finally checked my miter saw with a framing square instead of trusting the detents. The detents were off by about a degree and a half, which added up to a fat gap on every inside corner and had me recutting pieces until my scrap pile was taller than my bench. Swapped the stock fence for a shop made one with a stop block and my cuts land dead on now. Anyone else find their factory angles were the problem this whole time?
Had the exact same thing happen with a cheap jobsite saw a few years back. I kept chasing the problem with shims and filler and I bet I burned through a whole tube of caulk hiding corners that should have been tight. What finally got me was cutting a test piece, flipping it, and butting the two ends together against a straight edge. If you see light through the joint, your angle is off, plain and simple. That trick saved me from trusting the marks on the saw ever again. A stop block and a square check before every job is worth more than any fancy detent system out there.
