Visited a 1920s bungalow in Pasadena and saw the original trim. No miter cuts, just scribed butt joints.

Actually, "scribed butt joints" is a bit of a mix-up. Scribing is for fitting to uneven surfaces, like a counter to a wall. They probably just meant regular butt joints, which were super common in that era before power miter saws. It's a cool detail that shows the old-school craftsmanship.

Regular butt joints" reminds me of the time my dad tried to fix our porch railing with duct tape.
