Can we talk about how you handle seams on a big roll of carpet?

I was finishing a job in a big living room in Springfield last month, using a 15-foot wide roll. For a long time, I would just butt the edges together and try to get the seam tape perfect. This time, the homeowner pointed out a tiny ridge you could feel with your foot after I left. That was the tip-off. I went back and really looked at it... the backing wasn't fully melted together. I think I was rushing the iron, not letting it get hot enough to really fuse the two pieces. Now I wait a full 30 seconds after the glue bubbles before I press it down. Has anyone else found a better way to make sure those wide seams stay flat for good?

15-foot roll? That's a monster.

15-foot monster" is right, I've definitely created a few speed bumps myself by rushing that iron.

It's like that with a lot of things, you know, rushing the basics just makes more work later.
