Heard a guy at the supply house say trimming door jambs is for rookies.

He was an old timer with 30 years in, and it got me thinking about how I prep my floors. I always trim jambs flush before laying carpet, anyone else do it different?

You ever try just notching the carpet around the jambs instead?

Notching works fine if you're dealing with a standard 3/8 inch jamb, but I've seen guys run into trouble on doors with thicker jambs or uneven subfloors. The trick is to leave yourself an extra half inch of carpet past the notch so you can tuck it tight without it pulling back later. I've had more luck cutting the pad back an inch from the wall and then tacking the carpet right into the jamb with a hammer stapler instead of messing with notches every time. Saves a lot of frustration if you're doing a whole house and not just one room.
