Just crossed 1,000 square feet of commercial carpet in a single day for the first time

I've been doing residential work for about 3 years now (mostly bedrooms and basements) but got a call last month to help on a small office build-out near downtown. The job was 1,100 square feet of glue-down carpet tile, and I figured it would take me a day and a half. Turns out I finished in just under 9 hours, and that included moving desks and trimming around 12 cubicle posts. I was honestly shocked because I always thought commercial was way slower than residential, but the repetition of tiles really sped me up after the first row. My back was sore the next morning, no lie. Has anyone else noticed a big jump in speed when you switch from residential rolls to commercial tile?

Glue down tile is a different beast, once you get that rhythm down it goes way faster than wrestling rolls around. Give it a few more jobs and your back will get used to it, just stay hydrated.

Knew a guy who tried glue down tile on a hot day without a respirator, ended up loopy from the fumes and laid three rows backwards. @michael_williams is right, once your body figures out the twist it is smooth sailing.

Man, tell me about it. A buddy of mine does commercial flooring and he calls residential rolls "the devil's rug" because of the wrestling match they are. He got put on a hotel lobby job, like 2,000 feet of tile, and he said the first day he was crawling around on his hands and knees cussing every single tile. By day three he was popping them in so fast the foreman asked if he was even reading the pattern. Said the repetition is like a weird meditation until your knees give out. He also swore by a knee pad with a gel insert, said it saved his weekend. Did you use knee pads at all or just raw dog it on the concrete?
