Overheard a homeowner call our work 'just laying down fabric'

It was at a supply house in Boise, and it made me want to explain the whole process of tack strips and power stretching. Has anyone else had a moment like that where you felt the need to defend the craft?

Funny enough, my brother-in-law used to say the same thing about his floor guys. Then he tried to help a friend install some carpet in a basement rec room. Watching him fight with a knee kicker for an hour and still get wrinkles was a real eye-opener. The pros make it look easy because they know exactly how to pull it tight and lock it in.

Honestly, sometimes it does look simple from the outside. A homeowner sees the final smooth layer, not the prep work that makes it last. That basic view isn't always wrong.

Yeah but like... how much prep are we really talking about here? Feels like @matthew_west is maybe overthinking a coat of paint.
