Saw a crew in Des Moines pull a seam tight with a stair tool and I'm rethinking my whole knee kicker habit
I was doing a measure in Des Moines last Thursday and walked past a crew stretching a big living room with a straight seam in the middle. The lead guy grabbed a stair tool and a knee kicker, worked the seam from the middle out, and that thing laid down flat with no peek at all. I always figured a stair tool was just for steps and corners. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I've been fighting my own seams for nothing. Do you all use a stair tool to help pull a seam tight or is that just a Midwest thing?
That "worked the seam from the middle out" part is the piece folks skip. The stair tool gives you a short, stiff pull right at the seam edge, so you are not dragging the whole room with every kick. Doing it outward from the center keeps the stretch even on both sides instead of piling slack at one wall. It is not a Midwest trick, it is just a second set of hands that fits in your tool bag.
