Talked to a guy who quit using knee kickers for seaming and it threw me
Was at a supply shop in St. Louis last Tuesday and an older installer told me he stopped using his knee kicker for cross seams, just stretches everything by hand with a multitool. He said it saves him about 15 minutes per room and he hasn't had a pop-up seam in 8 years. Has anyone else tried ditching the knee kicker for seaming on residential jobs?

Patricia_hill60 makes it sound like rocket science but it's just carpet.

Oh man, I gotta push back on that. I've been using a knee kicker for 25 years and I can't imagine giving it up. The multitool stretch might save time but it just doesn't give you that same consistent tension across the whole seam (especially on a busy patterned carpet where a little slip shows). Plus my knees have been through the wringer already and I'd rather baby them with the padded kicker than risk a bad seam because I was in a hurry. You lose too much control without that mechanical bite into the backing.
