That thing a builder said about my seam tape that totally changed how I work

I was doing a job out in Phoenix last month and the builder watched me lay down some seam tape on a berber carpet. He told me I was pressing too hard and flattening the backing, which makes the seam show later. Has anyone else had a builder call them out on something that seemed small but actually made a big difference?

Hold on a minute, I gotta push back a little. I've been doing berber for 15 years and I press down firm on purpose to get that tape to really bite into the loop structure. If you're too light with it the tape just sits on top and you'll be re-doing the seam in six months when it pops. I've had builders try to tell me similar stuff before and usually they're repeating something they heard from one guy one time. Your pressure needs to be right for the glue to actually melt into the backing, not just sit there like a sticker.

Nah, but too much pressure can crush the loops though...

Wait, isn't it true that melting the glue requires heat from the iron more than just pressing down hard, @sandra_moore30?
