Unpopular opinion: those expensive seam irons are overhyped, my $40 thrift store one works just fine

I was skeptical when my buddy swore by his $300 Seam Iron but after 6 months using a cheap one I found on Craigslist in Denver I cant tell the difference in my seams, has anyone else tested side by side?

Man I feel this so hard. I grabbed a used one from a pawn shop in Phoenix for like 35 bucks and it's been going strong for two years now. My roommate got the fancy brand new one and honestly when we stitch together I can't see any difference in how our seams come out. It just seems like one of those things where people convince themselves they need the top of the line gear when the basics do the exact same job. Maybe if you're doing like museum quality restoration work or something there's a reason but for regular sewing projects I really don't get the hype. It is nice having extra cash for fabric instead of a fancy iron though.

Pawn shop in Phoenix for thirty five bucks? That's wild.

Extra cash for fabric instead of a fancy iron" - that part hit me hard. I spent way too much on a top of the line iron a few years back thinking it would change my sewing game. Turns out I'm still the weak link in the chain, not the equipment. I burned a hole through my favorite cotton shirt with it last month, so I guess the expensive iron doesn't protect me from my own clumsiness either.
