Watch out for tack strip nails poking through old subfloor in rental turnovers
Ripped out carpet in a 1970s duplex near Tacoma a month ago and a staple shot straight through a worn floor board and sliced my forearm, so run your hand along the subfloor before you kick anything, because who else has hit hidden fasteners left by the last crew?
Pulled up some old carpet padding in a place up in Lakewood and found a whole row of finish nails sticking up like tiny spikes where the last guy just pounded the trim back down instead of pulling it. Learned my lesson the hard way when one went through my sneaker sole. Now I keep an old pair of leather work gloves and a magnet sweeper in the truck, because staples and nails hide real good under that dusty padding. Walking the floor with a magnet before I touch anything has saved my hands more than once.
