Watching a tile guy in Boise prep his floor made me finally get why we spend so much time on the tack strip

He was down on his knees for an hour just making sure his substrate was perfectly flat, and it hit me that our prep work is just as important for a good finish, so what's the one step in your carpet prep that you think most people rush but you never skip?

Ever seen a guy skip the knee kicker?

You ever see guys just slap the pad down without a second look? That's the big one for me. I'll spend twenty minutes making sure the pad seams are tight and taped right, no wrinkles anywhere. A wrinkle under there will telegraph through the carpet every single time, and you can't fix it once the furniture is back. That extra time on the pad saves a callback later.

What kind of tape do you use on those seams, @hunt.hayden? Seen some guys use the cheap stuff and it just lets go.

Oh man, the tape thing is huge. So what's the actual difference you see between the cheap stuff and the good stuff? Like, does the adhesive just fail, or does the tape itself tear?
