Pro tip: that client who said 'check is in the mail' 3 weeks ago still hasn't paid
Small job for a local restaurant in Portland, $850, they kept saying the check was coming last week and now they're ghosting my texts. Anybody got a trick for getting through to someone who just stops responding?

Drive over there in person. Show up during a slow time like 2pm on a Tuesday, not during dinner rush. Walk in with a friendly wave, ask for the owner or manager by name, and just say you wanted to pick up the check since it's been sitting on their desk. Being face to face makes it way harder to ignore you than ghosting a text. Bring an invoice printed out with you just in case they claim they "lost" it or need the details again. If they try to brush you off again, ask if they can cut a check right now while you wait, or if a partial payment via card is possible instead. Most small business owners will fold when you're standing right there looking them in the eye.

The part about walking in with a printed invoice is key. I've had clients magically "find" a check the second I handed them a fresh copy of the same invoice they claimed was lost. Just having the paper in their hand makes it real, like they can't pretend anymore.
