Rant: Had to choose between paying myself or buying a collections agency service
I picked the collections agency for $300 on a $4500 invoice that was 90 days overdue, and the client finally paid up after the second letter went out, but has anyone else found that calling them yourself works better for smaller amounts?

Oh man, that's a tough spot to be in! Did the $300 feel like a relief at all, or was it just frustrating knowing you could have had the full amount if you'd handled it differently? For smaller invoices under $1000, I've had better luck just calling the client myself (you know, being a little pushy but polite). The personal touch seems to speed things up more than a form letter.

Honestly, a friendly call works way better for me too.

Skip the agency and just call them yourself next time, @cora813 - $300 is a whole lot of coffee money down the drain for a simple reminder. I've had clients ghost me until I rattle their cage with a friendly phone call, and then suddenly they're writing checks like they forgot they had a mailbox. Honestly, for anything under a grand, the personal touch saves you from paying someone else to do what your own phone can handle.
