I finally burned a hotel kitchen's fire alarm at 6am last Tuesday
I was prepping a breakfast shift at a small inn in Portland, just searing some bacon and eggs for a guest. The hood vent was weak, so smoke hit the detector before I could open a window. The whole place evacuated, guests in robes standing in the parking lot. Owner came out laughing, said 'you're banned from the bacon station for life.' Has anyone else set off a hotel alarm with something this dumb?

Oh man, that is hilarious and I totally feel your pain! I set off the alarm at a beach hotel once by making toast in the room. Not even bacon, just plain toast. The whole hallway filled up and this grumpy guy in a bathrobe came out yelling. I just stood there with my burnt toast feeling like a total idiot. The front desk clerk laughed about it the next morning though, so that was a relief.

That bacon story is gold, I love how the owner handled it with a ban from the bacon station. I remember reading about @casey268 saying this kind of thing is way more common than people realize, and it's true. Actually heard from a buddy who works at a chain hotel that they have a whole drawer at the front desk full of smoke detector batteries they remove because guests keep burning popcorn or toast at 2am. Your Portland inn story is way funnier than some grumpy guy in pajamas yelling about a toaster. Crazy how something as simple as breakfast can turn into a full evacuation.
