Wasted $120 on a fancy knife set that dulled in two weeks
I bought a 8-piece chef knife set from a trendy online brand back in March. By the end of the second week the main blade couldn't slice through a ripe tomato clean. I ended up going back to my old $40 Victorinox knife from culinary school and it still holds an edge better. Has anyone else had buyers remorse over those pretty knife sets that look good but perform poorly?

That $40 Victorinox is literally the gold standard for a reason. I picked one up from a restaurant supply store a few years back for like 35 bucks and it still shaves arm hairs. Those fancy sets with the colored handles or the magnetic blocks look cool on your counter but theyre usually made with cheap steel that cant hold an edge. The hardness number on the blade matters way more than the brand name. My victorinox has a 56 on the rockwell scale and my buddies fancy 200 dollar set was like a 52 or something. You basically paid extra for a shiny paperweight.

Paid extra for a shiny paperweight" - that killed me because it's so true. I fell for the same trap a few years back, got a pretty block set from one of those big box stores as a gift. First time I tried to chop an onion the blade basically bounced off the skin. Meanwhile my old Beater knife from a garage sale cuts through everything like butter. You're spot on about the hardness number too. Nobody thinks about the Rockwell scale when they're staring at those colorful handles. I learned that lesson the hard way after dulling two "fancy" knives in a month. Now it's just one good chef knife and a steel rod, same as you said.

Girl YES. I managed a hardware store for years and this is the SAME scam with kitchen stuff. Those pretty sets are ALL about looks. Spend that money on ONE good chef knife and a honing rod instead.
