Bought a $400 camera for soot pics and the lens fogged up in 2 weeks
I got tired of trying to explain creosote levels to homeowners over the phone, so I dropped $400 on a fancy camera setup to snap pics inside fireboxes. Two weeks in, the lens fogged up from the heat and moisture and now it takes blurry pics that look worse than my phone. Has anyone found a camera that actually holds up to the job, or should I just stick with my phone and a flashlight?
I always figured a phone and a flashlight was good enough and that a real camera was just burning money. Then a guy on my crew showed me his setup with a cheap endoscope camera he runs through a small hole, no lens exposed to the heat at all, and the pics came out sharp. That changed my mind about needing a $400 rig in the firebox. The trick is keeping the glass out of the heat, not buying a tougher lens.
