Bought a $60 brush on a Tuesday, found out by Friday my whole sweep was wrong
I picked up a stiff wire brush at the supply house in Dayton about 6 months back because it was cheap and I figured stiffer equals cleaner. A homeowner called me back 3 days later saying her flue looked scuffed up inside and she could see scratches with a flashlight. Turns out I'd been scrubbing glazed creosote with wire for a while, and all I was doing was polishing it shiny so the next layer would stick even harder. The sweep at the shop said "you're basically sanding it for the next fire" and that one stuck with me. I switched to a poly brush and a chemical creosote softener for glazed stuff, and my callbacks dropped off a lot. Anybody got a go-to for stage 3 glazed creosote that won't eat the liner?
