My old boss in Portland told me to always use a 12 inch brush for every flue

He said it was the only way to get a good clean, but on a job last week I found a flue that was only 8 inches wide. I had to run back to the truck for the right brush, which wasted almost an hour. Anyone else run into a flue size that really threw them off?

Ever think that 12 inch rule might be more about speed than a perfect clean? Like, maybe he just wanted to push through jobs fast and eat the cost of a few scratched up flue liners. Some guys value time over doing it the right way every time.

Portland boss with the 12 inch rule must have only worked on new builds. I found a 7 inch flue in an old farmhouse once, totally threw my whole day off.

Wait, a 7 inch flue? That's wild, @karenc20. I thought my old apartment had a weird setup. It makes that 8 inch one sound almost normal. Some of these old places are built with whatever was lying around, I guess. Your boss must have had a real specific client list to never run into that.
