That $22 fiberglass rod kit from the hardware store has quietly become half my calls this month
Three years ago I was hauling an 8 foot steel brush up a two story ladder in a rainstorm in Rochester and nearly ate it on a wet rung. A guy on the crew named Dave handed me one of those cheap screw together fiberglass rod kits he kept in his van and said just run it up from the hearth. Last month alone I used rods on 11 out of 14 jobs, everything from a ranch house in Henrietta to a stacked condo in Brighton with a 30 foot straight shot. The steel brush still gets used maybe once a week for real gnarly creosote, but the rods handle the everyday soot and I stay off the roof unless I have to be up there. I know old school sweeps will say you need eyes on the flue every time, and I get that. Do any of you run a camera on a rod instead of climbing, and does it actually flag blockages worth the extra 10 minutes?
