TIL a creosote log doesn't fix everything - spent 4 hours hand scraping a flue I thought was clean

I picked up one of those creosote sweeping logs at the hardware store last spring. Figured it would save me time on a rental property job over in Medford. Nope, that log barely touched the heavy glaze buildup in the chimney. I ended up spending 4 hours with manual rods and scrapers to get it safe. Has anyone else found those logs to be basically useless for real buildup?

Ugh, I feel your pain on this one. I tried one of those logs on an old fireplace at my dad's place and it barely did a thing, ended up doing the exact same manual scrape job you described. It's a bummer because they sound so convenient in theory, but real creosote buildup just laughs at them, doesn't it?

Right? "Real creosote buildup just laughs at them" - that's the perfect way to put it, @torres.riley. I once spent an hour with a wire brush and still felt like I was just polishing the stuff (guess that's why I'm not a chimney sweep by trade).

A rotary brush on a drill did way more than any log ever has.
