A guy in Phoenix asked me to hold his deposit check for two weeks, then went totally silent
Back in March I finished a logo and a 12 page brand guide for a smoothie shop in Phoenix, and the owner handed me a check for $1,800 with a straight face and asked me not to deposit it for 14 days. I said fine, figuring he just needed payroll to clear first. On day 15 the check bounced, his phone went to a generic voicemail, and the shop's Instagram just stopped posting. The wild part is his last text to me was a thumbs up emoji on the final files, so I thought we were golden. Has anyone else had a deposit go bad like that, and did small claims ever actually get you anywhere?
Something kind of like that happened to my cousin with a wedding DJ. The guy took a cash deposit, then kept pushing the date back, saying his van broke down, then his kid got sick, then his grandma died. Come to find out he was doing the same thing to like four other couples that summer and using the new deposits to cover the old refunds. Total mess. She filed in small claims and got a judgment but the guy had nothing in his name, so she never saw a dime. Sometimes the judgment is just a fancy piece of paper lol
