Had to choose between a flat fee and hourly for a big web design job. Picked the flat fee and I'm kicking myself now.
The client kept asking for extra changes after we agreed on the scope. By week 3 I had put in 20 more hours than I planned for. They say it looks great but I basically worked for minimum wage on this one. Anyone else get burned by the flat fee trap?

And the worst part is they always act like they're doing you a favor by even paying you at all. I had a client try to argue that "small tweaks" shouldn't count even though they took me hours.

@miaprice next time quote a flat rate for the job instead of hourly.

$300 worth of "small tweaks" and somehow they all ended up being "just a few clicks" in their eyes. My favorite is when they watch you stare at code for 20 minutes and assume you're on Instagram. Guess next time I'll bill by the blank stare instead of the hour.
