I used to think a client asking for a 'quick call' before a quote was just eager, but after three projects that went nowhere in the past year, I now see it as a major warning sign.

Sounds like you just had bad luck.

So what's the actual difference between bad luck and a real pattern?

Honestly that quick call is often the client trying to figure out if you're a real person they can work with. Maybe those three projects had other problems, like budget or scope, not the call itself. @the_faith might be onto something about bad luck, because writing off every client who wants to talk first could mean missing good jobs. Some people just communicate better by talking, and a short chat can actually save time later. Seeing it as a major red flag every single time seems like a quick way to turn down decent work.
