Just started asking for 25 percent up front on jobs over $800, and I've dodged 2 bad checks in 3 months
Two years ago I ran everything on a handshake and ate a $1,400 loss from a guy in Reno, so now I get a deposit before I buy a single sheet of material, and honestly it has made the whole back and forth smoother, has anyone else found that a bigger deposit scares off the tire kickers way faster?
Figured the deposit would do the same thing for me once I started asking, but the scary part is the guys who do pay it. Had one guy hand over $600 in cash without blinking and then hound me every single day about when the work would be done, calling twice a day and showing up at the shop. Did the size of your deposit change who actually says yes, like are you getting a different kind of customer now that it costs more to lock in a spot? I keep wondering if the upfront money filters out the flakes but pulls in the control freaks instead, because that has been my experience so far. Curious if the 25 percent line felt like the right number or if you bumped it up after seeing how people reacted.
