Got my neighborhood to start a compost co-op, 12 houses in so far
So a couple months back I was tossing another bag of veggie scraps in the trash and just felt dumb about it. I looked into curbside pickup but it was like $25 a month, seemed steep. Instead I made a flyer about starting a shared compost pile in my backyard, stuck it on the lamppost at the end of the block. Honestly thought maybe 2 or 3 people would bite. Now we have 12 houses dropping off buckets every Sunday morning. We take turns turning the pile and someone's chickens get the good stuff. It took about 5 weeks to get the rhythm down, first few weeks people brought stuff in plastic bags which was a mess. We sorted that out. Anyway, my garden soil is already looking darker and less like concrete. Anyone else run a neighborhood compost? How do you handle the smell complaints in summer?
