Hot take: solar panels on every new house should be law by now

My neighbor just told me his 6 kW system paid for itself in 4 years here in Phoenix and I realized we are all just waiting around while the sun literally bakes our roofs for free energy.

Honestly that math only works if you get good net metering or have a really high electric rate. Here in Arizona with net metering getting cut back the payback period is stretching out to 7 or 8 years for new installs. Tbh I'd still do it but the 4 year payback is more of a best case scenario than a guarantee.

Disagree, my system paid off in under 5 years in Texas even with lousy net metering.

Yeah out here in California the payback was around 5 years before NEM 3.0 hit... now it's more like 9 or 10 years for most people unless you get a battery and really shift your usage. The old 4 year payback numbers were definitely from a different era of solar incentives.
