I thought heat pumps were a bad fit for cold places until my neighbor got one

For years, I figured heat pumps were only for mild climates and would be useless in a real winter. My neighbor in Portland, Maine, installed a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat unit last fall. I was sure he'd be calling for a backup furnace by January. He showed me his power bills from this past winter, and they were about 40% lower than mine for the same size house, even during that cold snap where it hit 12 degrees. The tech has clearly gotten a lot better. Now I'm looking at them for my own place, but I still hear people say they're not reliable below freezing. Has anyone else in a cold climate made the switch and had it work out?

How cold does it get where you are? I'm in upstate NY and mine kept up fine last winter, even when it was below zero for a few days.

Yeah, that's the thing with modern gear, it's way tougher than we give it credit for.

What kind of unit did he get and how old is his house? I'm wondering if the insulation and the specific model make a bigger difference than people talk about... my place is pretty drafty and I worry it would just run nonstop trying to keep up.

That drafty house worry is real, what's your actual square footage?
