I've been arguing with my HOA about solar panels for 14 months now

Two sides in my head: one says just give up and save the headache, the other says I'm literally trying to do something good for the planet and they're blocking it. Our HOA rules say any exterior modification has to go through a design review committee. I submitted plans for a 6kW rooftop system back in March 2023. They came back saying the panels would be 'visible from the street' and that violates some aesthetic guideline. I've gone to three meetings, sent two appeals, even got a lawyer friend to write a letter. They keep punting it to the next meeting. Meanwhile my neighbor two streets over put up panels last summer and nobody said a word to him. Has anyone else dealt with a HOA that seems to fight solar installations while letting other people slide through?

Feel for you big time, that is such a frustrating situation. It drives me crazy when HOAs pick and choose who they enforce rules against, like your neighbor getting panels with zero hassle while you get the runaround for over a year. You’ve gone above and beyond with meetings and a lawyer friend, that’s way more patience than I’d have. Don’t give up, honestly, because sometimes these boards just hope you’ll quit and move on. I’d keep documenting everything and maybe file a formal complaint with the state if they’re violating solar access laws, it’s worth checking. You’re trying to do something good and they’re being petty, so stick with it!

Check your state's solar access laws, that usually shuts them up quick.

Check your HOA meeting minutes too @cora_west5 they might've already approved yours.
