I've been recycling plastic bags wrong for 8 years

Just found out last week that you can't put plastic grocery bags in the curbside bin. I've been doing it since I moved into my apartment back in 2016. My neighbor saw me toss a whole load of bags in and stopped me. She said the sorting machines at the facility get jammed by them. Now I have to take them to the drop-off at the local Safeway 3 miles away. Has anyone else been doing this wrong without knowing?

Wonder if it's actually that big of a deal or just one of those rules the recycling company made up to cover themselves. I've tossed bags in my bin for years and never seen anyone complain.

Yeah the bags get torn open by the machinery so they just end up as trash anyway, better to just dump it loose.
