My city's compost program failed last week and I had to act fast

I was at the community garden on Elm Street Tuesday morning when I saw the green bins overflowing with food waste. The city's pickup truck broke down, so everything was just sitting there for two days. I called three neighbors and we moved the worst of it into my backyard compost pile before it attracted rats. Has anyone else had their local services fall apart like this, and what did you do?

Our library's book drop broke last summer and books were piling up in the rain. A few of us just started taking them home to keep them dry until it got fixed. It's frustrating when basic services break down like that.

Books getting a little wet is hardly a national emergency. They're just paper, and libraries have insurance for that sort of thing. Taking them home seems like an overreaction to a minor problem.

My apartment's recycling chute got blocked for a solid month last year. I ended up with a tower of cardboard boxes in my living room that I pretended was modern art. My cat loved it, but my dating life took a hit when people thought I was just really into Amazon. What's the weirdest temporary fix you've had to live with?
