My city's 'green' festival had a weird moment that stuck with me

I was at the Phoenix Earth Day fair last spring, and they had a big tent giving away free reusable water bottles to cut down on plastic. The line was huge, and they ran out in like 20 minutes. The guy next to me just looked at the pile of empty cardboard boxes and said, 'So we all drove here for nothing?' It was a funny but kinda true point about the whole setup. Has anyone else seen a well-meaning event that missed the mark like that?

Our town's farmers market tried a 'bike to market' day with free bike tune ups. They had one mechanic for a crowd of hundreds. People ended up driving their bikes there in trucks. The lesson I took is to always call ahead for events like that. Ask how many items they have or how many people they can serve per hour. It saves you a trip and the frustration of showing up for something that's already gone.

Totally agree, @jana509. Always check capacity first.

That "drive here for nothing" line really hits home. It makes me wonder if the people planning these events ever do a simple head count of how many folks actually show up versus what they have ready to give out.
