My city's plastic bag ban has me buying more plastic than ever. Feels counterproductive.

Seriously, I heard on a podcast that these bans actually spike sales of plastic trash bags for home use. Even with tricks like @oliviawood keeping reusables in the car, you still end up buying those thicker store bags every time. They don't get reused as much as you'd think, so they just collect. Now I'm drowning in more plastic than before the ban. It feels like a total fix that isn't fixed.

Actually those bans WORK because they force you to reuse the thicker bags you buy, breaking the single-use habit completely. The goal was never zero plastic, it was less waste.

Totally get that! I used to be the worst at remembering bags until I started hanging two reusable ones right by my front door. Now I grab them on my way out like my keys, and it just became automatic. That thicker bag from the store is now my emergency backup for big trips.
