My community compost bin got shut down after someone threw meat in it

Had to haul 60 pounds of rotting scraps to the dump after the city cited us for smell complaints, anyone else deal with people ignoring the rules and ruining a good thing?

And @keith164 nailed it with that "one time won't matter" thing, but honestly I think the real problem is nobody wants to be the bad guy and call people out in the moment. If the person running the bin had just said "hey man that meat's gonna stink" the first time it happened, maybe we'd still have a compost spot. Instead everyone just hopes someone else will handle it til the whole thing blows up.

someone threw meat in it" - god that's always how it goes. One person decides their convenience matters more than everyone else's effort. Saw the same thing happen at my local recycling center when they banned plastic bags. Some guy just kept dumping them and now nobody can recycle soft plastics there anymore. It's like people see a shared resource and automatically think "well this one time won't matter" until the whole thing collapses.

Yeah honestly I used to be that "one time won't matter" person. This changed my mind.
