My heat pump skepticism ended after checking one winter electric bill

I thought heat pumps were overhyped for cold climates, but I swapped my old electric furnace for a Mitsubishi unit last October in Burlington. The January bill came in at $87 versus $164 the same month the prior year, and that was with temps down to -8. Anyone else see big drops after switching, or did I just get lucky with a mild winter?

yeah thats exactly what happened with my old system too. the emergency heat strips were kicking on every time it got below 25 and i had no idea. my bills were stupid high every january and i just assumed that was normal for winter. after i got my heat pump installed i did the same comparison and mine was like $72 vs $150 something. honestly i think most people with old electric furnaces have the same issue and just dont realize it. my installer actually showed me the wiring on the old unit and yeah the strips were set way too aggressive. so its probably a mix of the new unit being way more efficient and the old one just being wasteful as hell. either way im never going back.

Did you make sure to check the backup heat strip settings on your old furnace? That's usually the biggest hidden drain on electric bills, and I've seen people cut theirs in half just by fixing that one thing.
