My neighbor's compost bin tip cut my food waste in half

About 6 weeks ago my neighbor Carol, who runs the community garden on 5th street, told me to stop chopping my veggie scraps into tiny pieces and just toss them in whole with more browns. I thought she was wrong because everything I read said smaller breaks down faster, but I tried it anyway. Turns out my pile was too wet and dense, so the whole things just sat there for months without doing anything. Since I switched, my kitchen scraps bin is barely half full and the pile actually smells like soil instead of rotten. Anyone else find that less prep work made their composting way more effective?

The "just toss them in whole" bit got me. I stopped obsessing over my pile too and it actually started working. Less fuss, more dirt.
