My old gas mower died and I had to pick between a new one or a push reel

The choice was a $400 gas mower or a $120 manual push reel mower. I went with the reel mower for my small yard in Charlotte. It's been three months now, and I don't miss the gas, oil, or noise at all. The cut is actually cleaner, and it takes me about 15 extra minutes each week, which I don't mind. Has anyone else made a switch like this and found it easier than they thought?

My neighbor switched to a reel mower last year. He says it forces him to mow more often before the grass gets too tall. Seems like that's the real trick to making it work.

Yeah, and that frequent mowing actually makes your lawn healthier in the long run.

Honestly yeah, damp grass is a pain with a reel mower. I've been using one for about three years now and you just gotta wait until it's dry. If you try cutting wet grass it'll clog up the reel and leave giant clumps everywhere. Thicker grass is doable though as long as you don't let it go more than a week between cuts. I actually think it cuts better than a rotary mower if you keep on top of it, the blades just snip everything clean instead of tearing it.

How's it handle thicker or damp grass? That's my only worry about switching.
