Talked to a solar installer at a coffee shop and it shook me up
Was grabbing a latte last Tuesday and this guy next to me saw my climate action shirt, so we got to talking. He installs residential solar panels and told me that a ton of people are buying cheap systems off Amazon that don't even have proper heat dissipation. Said he's seen three house fires this year alone from panels overheating. I asked him how to tell the good stuff from the junk, and he said look for a UL 1703 label on the backsheet. That hit different because I was literally about to order a budget kit for my garage. Now I'm rethinking everything about how I was gonna approach solar. Has anyone else run into shady solar gear or gotten bad advice from a sales person?

...and honestly, the UL 1703 thing is probably the single best filter you can use. I've been messing with solar on my shed and a buddy's RV for a few years now, and I've seen some of those Amazon kits with no proper certification. The panels get scary hot even on a normal sunny day, not even accounting for a hot roof. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, spending a little extra on a known brand with that label is way cheaper than dealing with fire damage. Take it from someone who's had to replace a cheap charge controller that melted its own casing, the sticker is worth paying for.

Spending a little extra on a known brand" - see, I think that's where people get ripped off. Had a buddy who paid double for a name brand panel with all the stickers. Six months later, microcracks in the glass from normal temp changes. Same failure rate as my no-name ones. Last I checked, UL listing just means it passed testing once. Doesn't mean it won't fail on your roof. And those cheap charge controllers? Usually the same internals as the expensive ones, just a different casing. You're paying for the sticker, not better safety.

That UL 1703 sticker is honestly the best safety filter you can use without going crazy on price. A buddy of mine skipped it on a cheap kit and the backsheet started bubbling after three months in the sun, which is basically a fire waiting to happen. Grab a brand you recognize that has that label, and you'll sleep way better than saving fifty bucks on something sketchy.
