That neighbor who told me to stop bagging my grass clippings changed my whole lawn routine

He said letting them decompose on the lawn saves on fertilizer and keeps the yard greener, but I'm worried about my HOA's strict rules about messy lawns in our Chicago suburb - has anyone else dealt with this pushback and found a middle ground?

That mulching mower saved me too. HOA never noticed a thing after.

Is your HOA really that bored they're watching for grass clippings?

I had a neighbor in Oak Park back in 2018 who got into a full HOA war over his compost pile. He tried to hide it behind some bushes but the board president spotted it from her kitchen window and it was a whole thing. Eventually he switched to a mulching mower that chops the clippings up real fine, so small they practically disappear into the grass. That might work for you too since the HOAs around here can't really say anything if the clippings are basically invisible. Just gotta make sure you're mowing often enough so you're not leaving big clumps.
