Tried a weird trick to cut my food waste and it actually saved me $40 last month

I was getting really annoyed with how much produce I was throwing out every week, especially lettuce and herbs. My fridge drawer was basically a compost bin. Last month, I saw a tip online about storing greens with a dry paper towel in the container to soak up extra moisture. I was skeptical, but I tried it with a $5 clamshell of spring mix. I put two paper towels on top before sealing it. That stuff lasted a full 10 days before it started to wilt, which is crazy for my fridge. I started doing it with everything, cilantro, spinach, you name it. I added up my grocery receipts and I spent about $40 less last month just from not having to replace spoiled greens every few days. It's such a small change but it adds up fast. Has anyone else found a simple kitchen hack that cut down their waste?

That paper towel trick is brilliant for greens. @thomas.river, does the jar method for cilantro work with the tougher stems still attached, or do you trim them first? I'm always unsure how to prep it.

That paper towel trick is a total game changer, I do the same thing. I also started putting my green onions in a glass with an inch of water on the counter, they grow like crazy and I haven't bought a new bunch in weeks. For herbs like cilantro, I treat them like flowers and store the bunch in a jar of water with a loose bag over the top. My fridge used to be a salad graveyard too lol.

Wait, @thomas.river, cilantro hates that. It rots fast in water.
