Used to haul 6 trash bags of recycling to the curb, now I compost in a $12 bucket on my porch
Two years ago I was that person dragging six blue bags out every Sunday night in Riverside, feeling like I was saving the planet one crushed can at a time. Then a neighbor named Dana told me most of it was probably getting shipped overseas anyway, and I looked it up and kind of wanted to cry. So I started a compost bin in an old cat litter bucket on my porch, drilled some holes in the lid, and threw in coffee grounds and banana peels. First month it smelled like death and my roommate threatened to move out, so I added dry leaves and turned it twice a week. Now I have this dark crumbly stuff I mix into my tomato pots, and my trash is down to one bag every ten days instead of three a week. The funny part is I got way more joy out of watching worms do their thing than any recycling run. Anyone else here keep a setup this small, or am I the weirdo with a bucket on the steps?
