Vent: My neighbor said his new SUV was 'basically green' because it's a hybrid

We were talking over the fence last week and he was showing off his new giant truck. He said, 'It gets 22 miles to the gallon, that's practically an eco car now.' I just stood there, hose in my hand, watering my sad little vegetable patch. It's a 6,000 pound vehicle he uses to drive 2 miles to the office. The whole thing felt so pointless, like my trying to save water doesn't matter at all if that's what counts as progress. Has anyone else had a chat that just made you want to give up for a minute?

My old sedan gets about that mileage, and I'm pretty sure it's not saving the planet. It's easy to talk yourself into anything when you want the shiny new thing. I guess we all have blind spots.

Ugh, that hits home. I used to drive a big truck and told myself the same stuff. Then I saw a chart showing how much more gas even a "good" truck uses compared to a normal car. Felt like a total hypocrite. Sold it for a used sedan and my wallet thanks me every week.

But some of us actually need the hauling capacity. Not everyone just drives to an office.
