A single worn insert screw cost me 5 hours of head scratching last Friday
I was running a batch of 200 aluminum brackets on the VF-2 last Friday and noticed the finish getting rough on the floor of one of the pockets. I checked the program, re-posted the toolpath, and even swapped in a brand new 3/8 carbide end mill thinking the old one was dull. That ate up 4 hours right there. On a gut feeling I pulled the insert screw on the face mill and sure enough it was stretched just enough that the insert was shifting under load. A 60 cent screw. I had the machine back up in ten minutes after that. Has anyone else chased a finish problem around the tool and overlooked the holder itself?
