Appreciation post: the night shift guy who saved my setup with a Sharpie
Had a choice on the old Haas VF-2 last week: tear down a tombstone setup to chase a reamer that was running .003 out, or just shim it and run the job. Took the shim route because we were already 2 hours behind on a 400 piece run. Night shift guy wanders over at 11pm, grabs a Sharpie, marks the high spot on the holder, and tells me to clock it every time I load it. Ran the rest of the batch at .0005 and didn't scrap a single part. Anybody else got a quick fix that sounds dumb but just works?
Love this. I see it all the time with guys who've been doing this for years, they stop reaching for the fancy answer and just use what's in their pocket. My old lead used to mark jaw positions with paint pen so the next guy knew exactly where to clamp, saved us from scrapping a whole run of aluminum brackets. Sometimes the dumb fix works because it's simple enough that you actually do it every time.
