Appreciation post: went back to blue layout dye after 2 years of running dry erase marker on steel
Everybody at the shop said marker was faster and cleaner and I bought it. Then I scratched a part on a 4 inch boss because the ink wiped off under coolant and I couldn't see my line at all. Blue dye and a scribe from 1998 hasn't lied to me once since, what are you all using to mark steel?

Layout dye is def the move here but one thing people get wrong is the scribe. The scratch is actually weaker than the dye itself, it just gives you a valley for the dye to sit in so the line stays visible. Without dye rubbed into it first, a scribe mark alone is almost impossible to see on shiny steel. So its really the combo that saves you, not one or the other. Marker fails because it sits on top and coolant just washes it right off.
