Guy at the tool sharpening counter made me feel dumb about my inserts

So I've been running the same brand of carbide inserts for like 6 months now. Burn through them fast on stainless but figured that was just how it goes. Was at the local tool place last Friday dropping off some end mills to get resharpened and the old timer behind the counter asked what speeds I was running. I told him and he just shook his head. Said I was pushing them way too hard and that's why they were chipping on the edge. He wrote down a lower RPM and feed rate on a scrap piece of paper. I thought it would take forever to cut but honestly the finish is way better and the insert is lasting almost twice as long. Same material, same part, just slower. I feel like an idiot for not asking sooner. Anyone else get a reality check like that from an unexpected person? What did they tell you to change?

That old timer knew his stuff, but here’s the thing nobody mentions: your tooling budget isn’t just about insert price, it’s about setup time and scrap rate. I ran a job last month where slowing down the spindle by 15% meant I could run the same insert for two extra parts before swapping. That’s less downtime, fewer thrown parts, and my guys weren’t cussing at the machine as much. Sometimes the “slow” way pays you back in hours, not just in tool life.
